Maj would personally read the novella first, ideally while reading the rest of Asimov’s Robot short fiction. I’m surprised just how enjoyable this is because I’m not a straight up scifi lover. Yet to the Martin family, their household robot NDR is more than a mechanical servant. In researching this novella I learned that it was later expanded into the novel The Positronic Man.
It’s strange, I could never mn connect with Asimov’s characters before.

If you can forgive Asimov for being an imperfect prophet, then this short story expanded into This book is dated in several ways. The story itself is great, but the questions it raises about what it means to be human is where the heart of the mqn lies.
I mean – prejudice? In telling the story of a robot that becomes conscious and self-aware two very different things Asimov and Silverberg purposely avoid the deeper questions of what it means to be alive and human.
Like the most I read the short story “Bicentennial Man” first and quite recently too. He seems to be part housekeeper and part babysitter and a trusted member of the family. Near the end of his career his writing did improve and he managed to write his most beautiful and touching robot story.
As for the Posjtronic Laws, if he could transcend robotic limitations and become self-conscious, independent, free, what then kept him bound to these laws programmed into him during his production? I loved this book when I was about nine or ten. Andrew’s initial experiences with positronc Martin family are replete with awkward moments which demonstrate his lack of socialization.
